#9: Discovery Park Labyrinth
Play Audio
Partially funded through the Bend Sustainability Fund, the Discovery Park Labyrinth was designed by Lea Goode-Harris and Marilyn Larson of Creative Labyrinths. The custom design of this “three-circuit pass through with an outer ring” was created to provide two entrances, establishing easy access for guests coming from the east or west.
[LEA GOODE-HARRIS] “Now there are all sorts of labyrinth designs, including the Discovery Park Labyrinth called pass-through labyrinths, so there is a center place so you can keep walking through.”Although they may look similar at first glance, labyrinths and mazes have different layouts to encourage diverse kinds of interaction.
[LEA GOODE-HARRIS] “Labyrinths and mazes are two sides of the same coin. If you walk a maze, it’s high walls, false starts and dead ends. Where a labyrinth is usually a single path that takes you to a center place, both literally and metaphorically.”The circular design of the labyrinth is based on patterns in nature and is meant to evoke contemplation with yourself and alongside others.
[LEA GOODE-HARRIS] “Because labyrinths hold patterns of nature in their very design, branching, expanding, close packing like the cells of our body or blood vessels. They help us connect not only to our body but to the earth.”Labyrinths have existed for thousands of years, dating back to ancient times. They are places of containment and serve for inner explorations. Many believe that labyrinths may be portals that allow new ways of perceiving the world.
[LEA GOODE-HARRIS] “Marilyn calls labyrinths ears on the earth; a place of listening. So when you step into a labyrinth you’re not only listening to the earth, you’re listening to yourself, and you have the opportunity to listen to your heart.”Come explore the Discovery Park Labyrinth, crafted with locally-sourced Oregon mossy boulders. Wander through the path to enjoy the unique textures and variations of the rocks, and don’t miss the stunning centerpiece—a large, moss-covered boulder inviting you to pause and reflect.
