“Mechanical Waves”- a series of mosaic murals in Discovery Corner were crafted by Rochelle Rose-Schueler of Wild Rose Artworks. Rochelle, a Discovery West resident, utilized her science background to design the intricate murals. Take a look around Discovery Corner and you’ll see Deschutes Meander Belt 1 & 2 covering the seat walls, Seeing Sound 1 & 2 lining the planter walls, and Seismic Crush encircling the firepit.
[Rose-Schueler] “The fire pit ring is based on seismic waves, and that’s informed by the stratification layers in the Earth and how they’re bent and molded, and sometimes they break. And when they break, it creates seismic waves. And so I have several zones in this representation of stratification, layers that are break zones where the seismic events have occurred and have shifted the layers.
“These two planter murals represent sound waves or audio waves. Sound waves are visualized hooking a microphone up to an oscilloscope and charting that mathematically, and it makes sound waves. And these represent three different length sound waves superimposed on top of each other to represent the audio waves in physics and the mechanical waves of physics.
“This last set of pairs is from hydraulic waves and hydraulic waves and a river, when it starts to slow down in the flat areas or create meanders. And so this is a representation of our local, Upper Deschutes meander belt that we have up near Sunriver.”
In addition to the murals throughout the plaza, Rochelle created the small mosaic pinecones on the Skyline Ranch Road bridge at the main entrance to Discovery West.
