At the age of 24 and with $10,000 in prize money motivating her, Annie Kopchovsky, known as Annie Londonderry, set off to become the first woman to bicycle around the world. This seven-foot rusted steel sculpture by Chris Cole of Chris Cole Designs pays tribute to her adventures.
[Cole] “I wanted to do this particular shape as an inverted pyramid because for me, what it represents is triumph over improbability.”
A brilliant saleswoman and exceptional storyteller, Annie acquired her name as part of a deal with one of her sponsors, Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Company. Look through the sculpture’s porthole and you will see an image of Annie and her bicycle.
[Cole] “One of the reasons why I really wanted to do the ship portal is to also acknowledge the fact that she did take steamer ships over the oceans.”
Annie completed her task in fifteen months, launching a journalism career and writing about her adventures.
