At the heart of Discovery West is this firepit sculpture, crafted by Oregon artist and welder Jenny Ellsworth of Fairy Forge.
[Ellsworth] “I interpreted the Discovery West 2D logo into a 3D sculpture by using the negative space, to invite the fire that’s going to be flickering around it.”
Standing six feet tall and weighing over 600 pounds, this sculpture was fabricated using rusted steel plates. Jenny, who typically uses recycled shovelheads when crafting other pinecone sculptures, found the experience to be a fun challenge.
[Ellsworth] “Going through the process of working with new metal and coming up with the concept just right out of my mind was a little bit different because I’m used to finding metal and seeing that shape or thing in the metal already, and then creating it and finishing it off. I really enjoyed having this be part of my learning experience.”
