Next Door Neighbor: Bookstores & Libraries

It’s National Reading Month! Did you know that national reading month is in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday? To celebrate, we have put together a list of nearby bookstores and libraries and a few of their programs to check out.

  • Roundabout Books – Located in the heart of Bend’s NorthWest Crossing community, Roundabout Books is a full-service independent bookstore. Roundabout Books is an independently owned bookstore and cafe founded by local resident Cassie Clemans, a former teacher and business owner.
    • Storytime – Storytime is for parents/caregivers and children. Primarily the activities and books will be geared to the 0 to 5 years old age group with young child orientation. These events include movement, song and always some special books to share. Led by Kathleen who LOVES hedgehogs and all creatures great and small. Check it out on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 10:30am.
    • Book Clubs – All book clubs operate on a join-in basis and have various themes. Check the website or call the store for details about in-person vs zoom meeting status.
  • Deschutes Public Library – The Downtown Bend Library was designed by Thomas Hacker and Associates of Portland, Oregon. The space houses a large children’s area, community space, public computers, and meeting rooms.
    • Programs at the local library:
      • A Novel Idea 2023 – Authors, David James Duncan, María Amparo Escandón, Peter Heller, and Anne Griffin will be coming to Central Oregon on April 29 for the main event, and to offer you more than two dozen engaging programs in the month before their visit.
      • Family Story Time – Interactive story time with books, songs and rhymes designed to support early literacy skill development, social emotional awareness and family engagement.
      • Adult Programs/Youth Programs – Take a look at the calendar to see what events are occurring this year.

We hope you enjoy National Reading Month and are able to find a few enticing books or programs. Happy reading!
