Looking to unwind more in the new year? Come explore the newest addition to Discovery West’s growing network of community spaces, the Discovery Park Labyrinth. This new installation offers a serene spot for quiet contemplation and connection with nature.
A Collaborative Project
The labyrinth is the product of a unique collaboration between two talented designers, Lea Goode-Harris and Marilyn Larson of Creative Labyrinths, in partnership with Bend Park and Recreation District. The project was made possible through funding from the Bend Sustainability Fund and built by Botanical Developments. Together, these organizations have created a space that honors the natural beauty of Bend.
Lea Goode-Harris said, “The creation of this labyrinth was a collaborative endeavor from the very beginning. It is a wonderful example of what happens when people come together with a creative focus and share communication and trust.”
A Unique Design for Reflection
Incorporating local Oregon mossy boulders, the design of the labyrinth is a distinctive “three-circuit pass through with an outer ring,” leading to its central point featuring a large boulder. The labyrinth has two entrances, making it easily accessible for those coming from either the east or west. The design is simple but profound, encouraging a tranquil walk that emphasizes connection with nature and self-reflection.
Though labyrinths and mazes may appear similar at first glance, they serve entirely different purposes. Mazes are intended to challenge and puzzle, with dead ends and false starts, while labyrinths offer a single, winding path with no tricks or obstacles. The Discovery Park Labyrinth’s curves guide visitors toward the center, fostering a quiet, meditative experience. The circular form itself, rooted in ancient patterns found in nature, may inspire wholeness and balance—inviting you to slow down, breathe deeply, and explore both your surroundings and your inner world.
Labyrinths have been used for thousands of years, offering a peaceful space for introspection and personal growth. Many believe these sacred spaces act as portals, providing a fresh perspective and new ways of thinking. Whether you come to walk, meditate, or simply enjoy a moment of calm, the Discovery Park Labyrinth invites you to reflect, unwind, and find clarity.
A Space for Everyone
Designed with accessibility in mind, this labyrinth is the perfect place to take a mindful walk or ride, and it’s ADA-compliant, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the experience. It’s wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass side by side, and the compacted gravel surface ensures a smooth ride.
So, whether you are walking, in a wheelchair, using a stroller, or simply prefer a smooth, easy path, the Discovery Park Labyrinth is designed for all.
